Plant Based Burgers!

It is officially barbecue season and instead of eating the red meat burgers and hot dogs try this bean based burger that is incredibly delicious !! This recipe is gluten free, dairy, free, egg free, refined sugar free, and plant based. If you are ok with eggs you can substitute the flax egg with 2 whole eggs:

Black Bean and Sunflower Seed Burgers

Makes 8 patties


  • ½ cup onion, diced

  • 1 large garlic clove, minced

  • Flax eggs: 2.5 tbsp ground flax+ ½ cup warm water, mixed in a bowl

  • 1 cup gluten free brown rice flour

  • 1 cup grated carrots

  • 1 cup cooked black beans, roughly pureed or mashed

  • ¼- ½ cup finely chopped parsley

  • 1/3 cup almonds, grated or finely chopped

  • ½ cup sunflower seeds

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

  • 1.5 tsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1tsp oregano

  • salt & pepper to taste


  1. Preheat oven to 350F. In large a skillet, sauté onions and garlic in ½ tbsp oil. Mix your flax egg together in a large bowl and set aside for at least 10 minutes while you prepare the rest of ingredients.

  2. Add all ingredients (except spices and salt) to the flax egg and stir very well. Add seasoning and salt to taste.

  3. With slightly wet hands, shape dough into patties. Pack dough tightly as this will help it stick together. Makes 12 small patties.

  4. Bake for 25-30 minutes (15-17 minutes on each side) at 350F, until golden and crisp.
